Abstract from chapter:
Menopause simply means the stopping of periods. It is a natural event in every woman’s life. As women get older, our ovaries no longer develop the follicles that produce the eggs and hormones and therefore the level of the female hormone estrogen drops. When the production of estrogen ceases or is reduced to unmeasurable levels then our periods also stop. For some this can happen abruptly or it can stagger on with many women having irregular, light or heavy periods for some years before the periods actually cease.
