Book Excerpt From Chapter6: Hormone Replacement therapy (HRT) Risks and Benefits includes WHI study results .

The HRT Controversy
HRT is a controversial therapy. Why is it good or bad? Why are some for and others against HRT? Many people take an aspirin a day to prevent strokes, but you don’t see the media, friends and neighbours throwing their arms up in horror saying - “Don’t do it - it’s unnatural”. There is no widespread condemnation of aspirin, even though it may lead to bleeding from the gut, stroke and even death.
This debate has become even more prominent since the American WHI study reported its results in July 2002 stating that the risks of long term use of combined HRT outweigh the benefits for its use as a drug to prevent chronic disease. This is a good study but as in most cases is not the full story. The study itself did not concentrate on symptomatic or flushing women and this group is thought to have a different risk benefit profile.
